Peel needs help fighting COVID-19 now: NDP Brampton MPPs to Ford

Conservatives yet to deliver on help promised by Yarde’s motion

PEEL — As new COVID-19 cases mount in Peel, local NDP MPPs Kevin Yarde (Brampton North), Gurratan Singh (Brampton East) and Sara Singh (Brampton Centre) are calling on the Ford government to provide provincial assistance that should have come months ago.

It has been more than five weeks since MPPs passed Yarde’s motion urging the government to give Peel the resources it needs to do more testing, more contact tracing and more proactive workplace inspections. To date, the Ford government has failed to follow through with help.

“Local public health officials are doing their best with limited resources, and it’s time for the provincial government to step up,” said Yarde. “The people of Peel have been waiting for provincial help they were promised, and it hasn’t come. They’re worried about getting sick as COVID-19 continues to spread locally, they’re worried about how long it will take to get a test if they need a test, and they’re worried about how long it will take to get their test results.”

“This isn’t surprising, because it fits a pattern of Conservative and Liberal governments ignoring the needs of Brampton, like their refusal to fund a badly needed new hospital,” said Gurratan Singh. “But it’s a new low for the Ford government to pay lip service to Peel’s needs and turn around and do nothing because it’s pinching pennies to save a buck.”

Peel remains a COVID-19 hot spot in the province, reporting persistently high numbers of new cases.

“The people of Peel need help from the province in its fight against the second wave of COVID-19,” said Sara Singh. “I am urging Doug Ford’s Conservatives to immediately implement the NDP’s motion calling for that assistance.”
