Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles marks Anniversary of the 1984 Sikh Genocide

QUEEN’S PARK – Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP, issued the following statement marking the 39th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh Genocide:

“Today, New Democrats across Ontario are standing with Sikh Canadians in remembering and honouring the victims of the 1984 Sikh Genocide.

Ontarians remember June of 1984, when the army attacked the holiest place of worship for Sikhs, the Darbar Sahib in Amristar, Panjab. This attacked killed thousands of Sikhs who had gathered to commemorate the sacrifice of the 5th Sikh Guru.

We extend our deepest solidarity to our friends and neighbours who are living with the trauma of having loved ones perish during these horrific attacks, and the brutal repression that followed.

Our Ontario NDP Caucus sends solidarity and support to Sikh Ontarians as they move forward in healing and reconciliation.

Ontario’s New Democrats will always stand together with you, in remembrance.”
